When I moved to Manhattan in the 1980s I visited the Meatpacking District in the pre-dawn hours with my camera, knowing that this place would soon be gone. The cobblestones smelled from blood and sawdust, while prostitutes and drug dealers patrolled the nearly empty streets. How different this place is today. With the High Line, the Whitney, and high-end boutiques this once bleak neighborhood is an international tourist destination.
